In 1803 while Maine was still part of the state of Massachusetts, Bridgewater Maine was split into two three by six half townships. The south division being called Portland Academy, the north half Bridgewater. Population came slowly and winter weather did not help the fire in the belly to open up the Northern unorganized territories. March 2nd, 1858 Bridgewater incorporated and Maine became a state in 1820. Bridgewater is 436′ above sea level.
To get to Bridgewater Maine, if heading from the south up Interstate 95 or along US Rt 1, you can’t miss this village at the bottom of the hill. US Rt 1 cuts Bridgewater in half with a few roads heading east and west from this Aroostook County main highway artery.
From Canada there is a boundary border crossing from the east. Like all small Northern Maine rural towns, over 14,000 miles of back wood trails provide another way to access Bridgewater using your own power on foot or snow shoe or cross country skis. Or riding atop something with a motor plying the natural trails.
The definition of fun varies like the weather when you ask people what do they do for past times, for relaxation enjoyment. Small Maine towns like Bridgewater are loaded with volunteers who groom the recreational trails, who work on church and school activities. Sitting parked in a small cabin surrounded by wildlife is a hard location to beat and Bridgewater provides so many low cost property options. Head west to #9 Lake and explore the foot hills around it that the glacier created many moons ago. Man has not spoiled or over developed this region of the country.
