In spring take part like about 100 other paddlers do in the celebration of spring in “The County”.
Canoe and kayaks from all over the northeast take part in the Meduxnekeag River Race. An event started by Ricker College water paddling enthusiasts.
A 38 year old tradition, the Houlton Maine river race benefits Dollars For Scholars fund raising for the area college bound young adults.
The canoe river race starts in New Limerick to the west, is 9.5 miles long, ends with every eating red snapper hot dogs and sharing stories at the Riverfront Park in Houlton. Another earlier river race video to watch. Don’t get wet.
Attend a local public supper at the Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum or a breakfast at the Meduxnekeag Ramblers Snow Sled Club.
Our downtown Midnight Madness, the 4th of July parade, the multi day Maine State Agricultural Fair offer many options for fun. Houlton School of Dance has wonderful programs for all age children. So does the Houlton Children’s Starbright Theatre for young thespians.

Tennis and basketball courts, a new little league field are available to the public too. Head over to Baxter State Park to climb Mount Katahdin is another option.

More choices? How about a drive down to East Grand Lake to play in the water and enjoy the Million Dollar View! Or how about strapping on the boards, heading to Mars Hill’s Big Rock ski area? Come on.
Hop in the jeep. Get your passport ready when we roll down the window and the port inspector says “Bonjour”. We’ve hopping the boundary line, crossing the border into Canada to ski. Being smack dab on the border with Canada is a whole source of things to do for fun just crossing the boundary line. We are all related on both sides of “over home” and Houlton Maine border town status is a real perk!
The Millar Arena Civic Center offers indoor public ice skating and is home of the SAMHA (Southern Aroostook Minor Hockey) plus the varsity level Blackhawks high school program.
The Houlton Maine parks and rec program, the school and community music events are second to none. Houlton is the music town of Maine and respected statewide. We host many statewide jazz and show choir festival school competitions because of a large, hard working, highly trained music boosters organization.

In summer, every thursday night, McGill’s Community Band provides free open air outdoor concerts in the amphitheatre with 100 members of all age musicians making orchestra music!
Show tunes, big band, march songs, popular hits, hear them all. The largest community band in “Music Town” deserves a listen to so bring your lawn chair. Munch on a grilled snack from “The Bus” cooking them up curbside in the park. What a setting, under the maple shade trees and with a setting sun of dusk in our small friendly Maine town entertained by local volunteer musicians with wearing white dress shirts and red vests.
Farmer’s Markets are held Saturday morning in Houlton Maine’s Market Square.
The nearby Amish produce growers of Smyrna and East Hodgdon Maine and other area farmers pitch in to service shoppers in an outdoor settings!
