Crystal Maine, bordered on the south by Sherman, Island Falls to the east, Hersey to the north, Patten to the west.

The US Census folks claim roughly 269 folks call Crystal Maine home. The peak in 1920 of 508 local community members in Crystal was at crystal me communitythe height of potato farming and when the woods industry combined for lots of employment options. Small Maine towns were more insulated and self sufficient and farmsteads were the general rule before Interstate 95 and the Internet changes the local economic landscaped.

The elevation is 485′ and the zip code for Crystal is 04747 shared with the Island Falls post office. The small town office of Crystal Maine located on Rt 159 on the way between Island Falls in Aroostook County and Patten Maine in Penobscot County has shifted it’s activities. From local town administration in Crystal at the town office to consolidation with Island Falls which is smart to share resources and avoid duplication of efforts.

Head up the Poor Man’s Retreat Road to see white tail deer feeding and socializing. Put the kayak on the roof of the car or tossed in the bed of a pickup to a nearby Aroostook or Penobscot County Lake. Hike the trails, meet the locals and ask yourself, is it time, could I see myself living a slower healthier pace of life in Crystal Maine?

How To Get Here

The best way to get to Crystal Maine if you are in a hurry? Head up Interstate 95 and take exit 276 in Island Falls Maine. Hang left and head out RT 159 on the way to Patten that is roughly 10 miles away.

You can also take the Sherman exit of I-95, number 264 on the reflectorized traffic mile market sign. Proceed north up RT 11 into Patten and turn right by the Methodist church to go east on Rt 159 to get to Crystal another approach.

No stores, no traffic lights, no parking meters, no bus stop or airport. Those are missing. You are below radar and can get lost on purpose from your day to day hectic pace if you want. Crystal is a bedroom community in Southern Aroostook County and Northern Maine. It is a place you spend time in the woods, on the trails, sampling the buffet of waterways and clean lakes. Things To Do For Fun

Camping, being outdoors and fishing, walking, being surrounded by nature. Maine is famous for being able to simple pleasures living off the land. You don’t get that setting in the concrete jungle of city living. Fish Stream, the Thousand Acre Bog are teaming with life in an all natural habitat. The trail system for snow sleds and ATV four wheelers opens up the areas not served by roadways.

Watch the farming operations, gathered your own firewood to cook on that open fire. Fall colors during leaf peeking, cross country skiing during the blanket of white during winter. Visiting the boatloads of waterfront lakes surrounding this northern  Maine bedroom community of Northern Maine called Crystal. The pace is slower, you entertain yourself and the pleasure for fun is no or low cost. Commercial activity is missing. No one wants to get into your pocket or to get you to pry open your wallet.

Homestead, start a farm or just plan vacation stops whenever you can sneak away from population centers in Crystal Maine. Remember, you are not far from the north entrance to Baxter State Park. And pretty handy to Mt Katahdin hiking, visiting the Allagash Wilderness Waterway with the old Chamberlain steam locomotives frozen in time. The Patten Lumberman’s Museum has bean hole bake bean suppers and early forestry timbering history to share with you. This is a farming community in Northern Maine with Amish settlements not very far away.
