The population of Littleton Maine today is around 1068 folks.

The town like most of Northern Maine started out as a land grant to a littleton me communitySouthern New England school sold off to fund the education in Massachusetts. Littleton’s north half belonged to Framingham Academy, the township’s south half controlled by Williams College.

The laying it all out on paper in Littleton started in 1800-1801 and development of this rich farming community began after that.

How To Get Here

Head North young man, US RT 1 divides Littleton Maine in two halves.

But before paved department of transportation Maine roads were steamed with new hot top to zip along, it took a long time.

Sometimes the early settlers would not have made it without the help of First Nation Maliseet and Micmac native tribe locals.

There are stories about wayward travelers loosing their way and wandering over into Canada. With kind souls in Woodstock New Brunswick nursing the tired, hungry and bug bitten discouraged Boston area hikers back to health.

I have read stories of food deprived early settlers who were given fish broth to keep the food down as hydration and rest got them back on their feet.

There was no GPS to punch in and sit back, waiting for the New Zealand like voice do all the work in early days settling Northern Maine.

We’ve blogged about Littleton Maine before, it’s one of my favorite local towns where we list, market, sell properties.

How to explore Littleton and get here. If you don’t come up from Houlton Interstate 95’s Exit 302 with a straight US RT 1 shot. up thru Northern Maine.

Things To Do For Fun

Some Maine towns we can brag up hunting, fishing, all the variety of trees and some abandoned farm fields to explore. But they don’t have lakes, there is nothing much more than a road or two and wildlife.

Littleton Maine is different. For starters, there is the Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum video to tour.

Agriculture, Farmers Museum In Northern Maine.

The public farm table size home made suppers are too shabby either. Lots of food, a little money, often freier maine farmsteadthere is music too!

And the Meduxnekeag Rambler Snow Sled Club video.

This place feeds you, is a great social setting and you can rent the facility for weddings, parties, business meetings, family reunions.

I learned how to swim in Cary Lake that has quite an undertow out in the middle.

It lies north of the snow sled club Ward log home clubhouse on the Wiley Road.

The local Maine potato farms offer activity to watch and learn or to pitch in for a salary.

My kids all worked the Maine fall potato harvest.

They earned spending money, funds for clothes they wanted from local farmers like Leslie and Greg Schools in Littleton and Amy and Danny Corey’s operation in Monticello.

You are only one town north of Houlton Maine, the shopping, business and county seat.

Houlton Maine offers lots of conveniences and facilities from public libraries to an indoor ice hockey arena, 2 screen movie theatre, an outdoor community band shell and local farmer’s market.

Littleton Maine has a playground for the kids and you won’t believe the view from Littleton Ridge that can get a little windy at times!
